In an online statement, the health foodcompany described the phenomenon asa “fast growing trend.” They said: ”Richlycolored purple foods are popping upeverywhere: purple cauliflower, black rice,purple asparagus, elderberries, acai, and soon. The power of purple goes beyond thevibrant color and often indicates nutrientdensity and antioxidants.”

Matthew Plowman, a Nutrition Adviser atCardiff Sports Nutrition, agrees that purplefoods are full of natural health benefits. Hesaid: "The benefits of antioxidants have longbeen discussed, but they are known to fightdisease, keep you looking younger, reduceinflammation and are good for your heart –basically, why wouldn’t you eat them?"

Essentially, the darker the colour of a food,the higher the contents of antioxidantsand nutrients will be, and the healthier thefood. In fact, one health and nutrition studyfound that those who ate purple fruit andvegetables regularly often had a reducedrisk of getting high blood pressure and low cholesterol.
