Italian food is worldwide well known for its good taste, rich diversity, quality and safety. There are more than 4 million food enterprises in Italy, much more than other European countries. The Mediterranean Diet has been recognized as a World Heritage by Unesco and Italy, according to international rankings, is in first place for longevity and food wellbeing of its population.

DOP and IGP products represent a fundamental part of the Mediterranean Diet. At the end of 2019, Italy confirms its leading role in the number of certified agri-food products. 

Today, one product out of four registered as PDO, PGI, TSG in the world is Made in Italy.

Italy has the most strict food safety control in the world. The FAO- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has set up its headquarters in Rome, EFSA-European Food Safety Authority is based in Parma. These and many other aspects highlight the importance of Italy in the world food industry.
